Our relationship with the Portuguese dates back to the 16th of June 1373. It established a treaty of perpetual friendship and unions. It was an alliance between two sea-faring states and is the oldest continuous union in effect today.
This union has borne fruit over the ages and has delivered up Marmelade, which is derived from Gailician-Protuguese, and tended to be, in its earliest form, quinces.
Its very early origins stemmed from the need to be able to consume sweet summer fruits in the depth of winter, and owes its back story to the Romans who in turn borrowed a Greek method of preserving whole fruit.
The quince was later replaced, in 1635, by the Sweet Orange from China, both of which are believed to have been bought to our shores by Portuguese mariners.
One of the earliest English Orange Marmalade recipes was in the 1680’s in a cookbook of Elizabeth Rainbow and Elizabeth Thomas found in the archives at Dalemain House and became the inspiration for the Marmalade Festival.
Dalemain House has now become the home of the prestigious World Marmalade Awards, which we are happy to be the recipient of.
One of the earliest records of marmalade use, was when King Henry VIII received a box of quince marmalade, in 1524, from Mr Hull of Exeter.
The late Queen Elizabeth liked to start the day with a Seville bitter marmalade.
